The distributor, Pacific Comics began publishing titles for direct sales through comic shops in 1981 with the inaugural issue of Jack Kirby's CAPTAIN VICTORY AND THE GALACTIC RANGERS. This upstart company challenged the major companies to pay the artists and writers fairly. Pacific maintained that any of its creators could keep the rights to anything new and copyrightable. Marvel and DC had always maintained that its artists could create any new character, but Marvel and DC immediately owned it! Pacific also was the first company to give payments according to the sales figures. Soon afterward DC and Marvel gave royalties according to sales.

Of course, all of the very finest talent began working for Pacific. Berni Wrightson, Ploog, Conrad, Williamson, Joners,  Mayerik, Redondo, and Stevens all contributed to Pacific's success. Business became too brisk for the two brothers who had been selling comics out of a closet, and in a few short years the publishing empire came crashing down leaving behind some of the greatest comics ever published!

Pacific Comics was similar to Image Comics in many ways. Image Comics, founded by Todd McFarlane, felt that he could earn more with his own characters than by working for Marvel Comics. Others, as we all know, joined up with him and are now producing some of the most exciting comics of the nineties.

What does all this mean to a collector? Answer: High quality art and stories can be purchased at a fraction of true worth. Try to imagine that Pacific had not gone bankrupt and was still publishing comics. It's likely that Image Comics and Todd would simply have joined the staff at Pacific to produce the most exciting comics of the nineties. However, since Pacific is no longer around to promote its projects, the value of these gems has remained fairly low for many years. Most of these books trade around two to five dollars with cover prices of $1.50! Marvel and DC sold comics at around 60-70 cents at that time so a book at $1.50 compares to $2.95-$3.95 (in 1998 dollars). Simply translated, a collector has the choice of buying a $3.95 hot book published today or spending the same $3.95 for a mint condition book with proven top creators published 15 years ago. High quality pubs are receiving high grades of 9.8 regularly from CGC and several titles are available as Certified Only.
